Through the use of aircraft cable with
swivel anchors, piping, ductwork and suspended equipment can be
safely prevented from swinging out of control during earthquakes
or when exposed to wind.
Cable braces are designed so when they
are installed with sufficient slack they do not interfere with neoprene
or spring isolator function but effectively control movement, preventing
equipment detachment and excessive damage.

Controlling sway is frequently not enough
to insure safety. Rod stiffeners such as angle attached with
seismic rod clamps (RSC) prevent suspended rods from buckling from
vertical movements. Mason isolation hangers which have vertical
limit stops should be used to minimize travel and reduce damage
due to excessive acceleration. These vertical limit stops
are standard on all Mason precompressed (PC-prefixed) isolation
hangers.

SAB & SAS
Anchorage of equipment in seismic zones
is an important part of system restraint. When anchoring to
concrete there are a variety of methods available. Our in
depth research has revealed the best attachments for seismic zones
are made with the wedge type expansion anchors. They provide
the highest design load for the smallest hole size. Since
they are load assisted, they provide excellent resistance to vibration
and shock loads. Their slip potential is actually a positive
feature in seismic applications giving early warning of potential
failure whereas other anchors just fail catastrophically.
Mason offers two types of wedge anchors.
Our SAB seismic anchor bolt is a female wedge utilizing a cap screw
to fasten to equipment. This design is for use with restrained
mounts where periodic removal and inspection of the mounts may be
required. The benefit is that they do not require lifting
of mounts or equipment over a stud.
Mason's SAS seismic anchor stud is the
same wedge design as the SAB anchor but with a stud instead of bolt,
for attachment. We offer this form for suspension applications
such as with our SCB, seismic cable brace system, for use on piping
and suspended equipment.

*These tension values are applicable when
the anchors are installed with special inspection as set forth in
Section 306 of the UBC code.
Shear and Tension values are for anchors
installed in stone aggregate concrete having 3000 PSI minimum compressive
strength at the time of installation.
Values are for anchors installed with a
minimum spacing of 12 diameters on center and with a minimum edge
distance of six diameters. Spacing may be reduced to six diameters
provided the values are reduced 50 percent. Edge distance
may be reduced to three diameters provided the values for shear
are reduced 50% and the values for tension are reduced 30%.
Linear interpolation may be used for intermediate spacings and edge
margins.
Ratings may not be increased to accommodate
periodic loads such as those from wind or seismic forces.
